This iconic UNESCO World Heritage site started off life as an imposing river fortress for the formidable force that was William the Conqueror, dating back to the 1070s. Old Royal Naval College history

Thought to be an eyesore, the redesign of Greenwich Palace was begun in 1694 when English architectural heroes Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor were approached with the project. The medieval palace, once home to Britain&rsquo;s iconic monarchs Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, had been taken on as a project by Charles II following the restoration in 1660. But his finances and enthusiasm for the site quickly waned, and only one new wing had actually been built &ndash; the eastern range of King Charles Court.

This wing and the grounds were donated as a Royal Warrant by William III in 1694 to become a site for injured and elderly soldiers, and it was then that Wren and Hawksmoor were called in to help. Wren&rsquo;s final design laid out the buildings into two halves, with twin domes inspired by his recent work at St Paul&rsquo;s Cathedral, to maintain the view of the river from the Queen&rsquo;s House, as requested by Queen Mary. But it was Hawksmoor who carried out the majority of the work and drew up the working designs as Wren&rsquo;s was kept away by his extensive commitments. In 1696, work was finally started to create the four courts, and complete the site which went on to provide a home for over 2,000 Royal Navy veterans.

London Bridge History

London Bridge has been built and destroyed many times over the centuries. If you&#39;re interested in its long-standing history, you can even buy London Bridge tickets for an in-depth tour. As fires engulfed the city, wars raged between Romans and Saxon invaders, rulers were overthrown, and new conquerors took their place, the London Bridge stood as a witness to it all. Initially, the first London Bridge was a military-style pontoon built in 53 AD in Roman Londinium, only to be destroyed seven years later. In 100 AD, a new bridge that connected the South Works in Southwark to Londinium was built, and it wasn&#39;t until 1190 that the first stone bridge was erected.

In 1305, William Wallace, a Scottish Knight, was the first traitor to have his dismembered head displayed on the London Bridge, giving the bridge its gruesome reputation. The present bridge was built in 1971, right next to Rennie Bridge, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened it in 1973. William III and Mary II were crowned jointly in 1689, and were instrumental in transforming Nottingham House into Kensington Palaces.

When Queen Mary died from smallpox in 1694, William was overcome with grief. Kensington Palace history

Home to the British Royal Family since the 17th century, Kensington Palace was once an unassuming villa known as Nottingham House. The Stuart and Georgian monarchs who lived there, however, transformed Nottingham House into the Kensington Palace visitors can enjoy today. The newly-crowned monarchs William III and Mary II (1689-1702) first sought out Kensington as a much-needed retreat from the smoke and damp of the city; their first home was Whitehall Palace, in the heart of London. In 1689, the King and Queen commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to draw up the plans for transforming Nottingham House into Kensington Palace. Queen Mary project managed the renewal of the building herself.&nbsp;

While the Palace was in progress, the royals spurred on an era of magnificent balls, showcasing their new ornate rooms, opulent staircases and impressive halls. Once or twice a week, the King and Queen also held Drawing Rooms, which became the focal point of court life. In all their finery, the King and Queen would meet and mingle with ambassadors and foreign princes. However, when Queen Mary died from smallpox in 1694, William ceased these decadent evenings in favour of more sedate concerts and gatherings. Despite his grief, William finished the building with a grand gallery at the south of the Palace, enlarging Sir Christopher Wren&rsquo;s original plan.

Windsor Castle history&nbsp;

For over 1,000 years, Windsor Castle has been the English royal residence. This stunning castle, occupying 10.5 hectares/26.5 acres of land, is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world.

William the Conqueror first made use of this vast space after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, crafting the castle out of wood in what was known as a motte-and-bailey style. The castle served as an excellent watchtower over the River Thames and Windsor Forest. Henry I was the first monarch to use the castle as a home. But various alterations to the site have since been made by his royal successors, including the addition of the beguiling Round Tower and a stone keep by Henry II. Perhaps no monarch worked on the castle as extensively as Edward III, however, who spent a vast amount of money on adding and improving it during his reign.

As well as private apartments for monarchs and visitors, the Castle contains an upper ward, which houses the royal library. This room contains priceless works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, to name but a few. However, when a fire broke out across the Castle in November 1992, a few works were sadly destroyed or damaged, along with more than 100 rooms. The Grand Organ - built and installed in 1695, the Grand Organ is one of the cathedral&rsquo;s most exceptional artefacts after undergoing several restorations over the centuries. It has 7189 pipes, five keyboards, and 138 organ stops.

The Crypt -&nbsp;St Paul&rsquo;s Crypt extends the entire length of the building and houses over 200 monuments. About The View from The Shard

Journey to a height of up to 800ft (244m); to the top of London&rsquo;s tallest observation platform and premium visitor attraction, The View from The Shard. Formerly known as the London Bridge Tower, &lsquo;The Shard&rsquo; was designed by famed architect, Renzo Piano. Piano, who is most famous for designing the Pompidou Centre in Paris, France, began designing The Shard in 2000. His design was fuelled by the desire to create a modern building that stood out amongst the London Skyline without appearing too overbearing. As such, the building resembles a large piece of glass pointing out of the ground, and thus, The Shard was aptly named.

Piano&rsquo;s design has become a symbol of modern architecture in contemporary London. It incorporates both aesthetically and structurally unique features, drawing inspiration from the spires of different London churches. The building&rsquo;s windows have a special glaze that reacts to light in a very intuitive way. Depending on the season or time of day, the glass can reflect different intensities of light, casting unique luminosity.

The entire building process took over three years to complete. In that time, the structure rose by 10 feet per day. Many of the glass panels were put in place before the building reached its terminal height of 1000 feet. By 2012, it officially became the tallest building in Europe.

The Shard offers a multitude of corporate, entertainment and dining facilities. Floors 2 to 28 of the building are used as office space rental areas. The 31st to 33rd floors are dedicated to restaurants. The five-star hotel, Shangri-La takes up a staggering 18 levels, from the 34th floor to the 52nd floor. Some can even call The Shard their home, as floors 53 to 65 are occupied by residential apartments.

Commissioned by the British shipping magnate Jock ‘Whitehat’ Willis, the Cutty Sark was launched from Dumbarton in 1869. She was a masterpiece - a showcase of expert sailing ship design. Her three masts set the ship forwards at an incredible speed of 17 knots, making her one of the fastest ships on the sea in the 1870s. Her speed made her a highly profitable vessel as she traversed the globe, bringing crops of tea from China - an incredibly fashionable commodity in the tearooms and parlours of Victorian Britain. Inflated by the stories of her prowess on water and her success in trade, the Cutty Sark’s owners put her forward for a tea race in 1872. The stakes were high as people put huge bets on her sure-fire victory. She ran neck and neck with a competing boat, Thermopylae, in the Indian Ocean, until the Cutty Sark’s rudder broke loose, costing her the race, but nevertheless cementing her legend on the water. However, there were dark times ahead. Industry spurred on the advent of steamships on the water, setting a new standard of speed for merchant ships around the world. And in 1880, when the Cutty Sark set off on a voyage to Japan, a fight amongst the crew left one man dead and a mutinous crew on board. The captain committed suicide thinking his career was ruined. The Cutty Sark was held to account and soon a new reputation was assigned to her as a ‘hellship’: a cursed vessel. Her fortunes, however, were not to be consigned to superstition for long. For a decade, she would preserve her legend on water through lightning voyages and the careful and generous attention of her owner, Jock Willis. The site had the advantage of being on higher ground, and already had solid foundations. The first building, Flamsteed House, was built in less than a year, and cost just over £500. Flamsteed spent 40 years there, making over 50,000 observations of the moon and stars. Flamsteed and Edmond Halley, the first two astronomical observators, plotted every star visible in the north and southern hemispheres. Their work was key in helping to develop the first accurate clocks. Up until the late 1800s, there were no measurements of time that were consistent both nationally and internationally. And in a world becoming more globalised every day from the construction of railways and international shipping lanes, an international time standard was vital. Hampton Court Palace history

It was Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII&rsquo;s Lord Chancellor, who began Hampton Court Palace&rsquo;s transformation from an ordinary country house to a magnificent palace in 1514, on the north bank of the River Thames. The location of the Palace was significant in allowing fresh water to flow throughout the building - a rarity at the time. Wolsey&rsquo;s ambitions to create a grand building where he could host the King, the royal court, and monarchs from across Europe was a resounding success, as Henry VIII loved the Palace so much, he eventually took Hampton Court for himself. 
 
The King used the Palace as a symbol of his status, demonstrating his power through lavish banquets, decadent court life, and extravagant works of art. By the 1530s, the Palace was also a hotel, a theatre, and a sprawling leisure complex. And the 17th century saw the Palace as a venue of firsts. Hamlet and Macbeth were first performed at Hampton Court Palace by Shakespeare&rsquo;s &lsquo;King&rsquo;s Men&rsquo; for the new Stuart king, James I. The Great Vine

Planted in 1769, the vineyard is a longstanding feature of Hampton Court Palace. Its original name is &lsquo;Schiava Grossa&rsquo; which means Black Hamburg. The vine is still cultivated through the Victorian extension method, which involves a glasshouse. The grapes are usually ripe after the August Bank Holiday and are sold during the first three weeks of December &ndash; in the past, the grapes were sent to Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle.

The Crown

A replica of the crown that was made for Henry VIII, and worn at the coronations of each of his children, sits in the Royal Pew on display for visitors. It stands as a symbol of power, monarchy, and religious authority. The original was melted down at the Tower of London by decree of Oliver Cromwell in 1649. The replica was built from the detailed descriptions of Henry VIII&rsquo;s servants who itemised the size and position of each 344 rubies, sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, and pearls that embellish the crown.

Chapel Royal

The Chapel Royal delivers traditional services throughout the year and is a masterpiece of religious architecture with a rich colourful design in Tudor style. Kings and queens sit in the private pew which looks down the main body of the chapel and it was even here, in 1540, where Archbishop Cranmer handed Henry VIII the letter accusing Catherine Howard of her adulterous behaviour.

Hampton Court Gardens

Hampton Court Gardens are a horticultural feat to be admired. The park covers 750 acres and the formal gardens cover 60 acres. Within the Court Gardens lies the Great Vine, The Privy Garden &ndash; a recreation of the 1702 garden for William III, Tiltyard Walls, Home Park &ndash; 700 acres of deer park with ponds and wild bird. Not to mention the Palace Maze from 1690, made up of half a mile of winding passages between 7ft high yew trees.

Tudor Kitchens

A testament to Tudor dining, Henry VIII&rsquo;s kitchens at Hampton Court are the largest kitchens of their era. Built between 1530 and 1737, the kitchens served up to 600 people twice a day, as well as the royal banquets. Working in the kitchens was hot and dirty &ndash; a Spanish visitor in 1554 even called it a &lsquo;veritable hell&rsquo;. The cooks would often lie by the fire in very little clothes and would drink on the job, having access to all the beer supply.

History of the Royal Mews

The Royal Mews has been the location of the sovereign&#39;s road transport since 1760 when George III moved his carriage collection closer to his new home at Buckingham Palace. Since then, it has been updated by several monarchs in keeping with their changing transport needs. 
 
Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach, and the Australian State Coach, which was given to Queen Elizabeth II as a gift from the Australian people. The most dazzling of all is the Gold State Coach, however, which has been used at every coronation since that of George IV in 1821, and which played a central role in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.

The Royal Mews facts

	<li>Cleveland Bays, another type of horse used to pull the carriages, are one of the oldest breeds of horses in the UK.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>The Royal stables were originally located in Charing Cross, where the National Gallery is today.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Queen Victoria took full advantage of the ample space at the Royal Mews. She kept up to 200 horses there at one point and also set up a school for the children of its employees.</li>
	<li>The Gold State Coach weighs almost four tonnes and needs eight horses to draw it. It never moves faster than walking speed.</li>

Arsenal FC History

Arsenal has an incredible history dating back to 1886 when a group of workers from Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory decided to form a football team. The squad called themselves Dial Square, after the sundial atop the entrance to the factory. The iconic red kit we know today manifested in 1895, two years before the team became professional. Fred Beardsley, Bill Parr and Charlie Bates left Nottingham Forest to join Dial Square, bringing their old red kit with them. The club decided that the most inexpensive way to kit out the whole team was to match their outfit to the same colour as the ex-Forest players.

Charlie George attended the re-opening and currently leads Legends Tours of Emirates Stadium alongside Perry Groves and Nigel Winterburn.

The museum also features two impressive video theatres and twenty primary displays based on Arsenal&rsquo;s proud history, from its formation in 1886 to the present day. These displays include a selection of iconic shirts including those worn by Alex James in 1936 FA Cup Final and the 2015 FA Cup Final shirt signed by the winning squad. Visitors can also see a collection of shirts, medals and trophies from former Arsenal captain Joe Mercer and the shield commemorating the club&rsquo;s hat-trick of League Championships from 1933-1935.

History of the Wembley Stadium

The original stadium was opened in 1923, and was first called the Empire Stadium - designed for the British Empire Exhibition. It was built by Sir Robert McAlpine, and cost around &pound;750,000 at the time. Plans were to demolish the stadium at the end of the exhibition, but Chairman of the Empire Exhibition Sir James Stevenson decided to keep it standing. 
 
The first footballing event held at the stadium was the FA Cup Final in 1923. It later became the go-to stadium for cup finals and international matches, including the 1966 World Cup Final, which England famously won. 
 
It was also well known as a live music venue. The first band to ever perform there was Yes in 1969, but it would later go on to host The London Rock and Roll Show and Live Aid. Michael Jackson performed there 15 times, the most prevalent performer the stadium ever saw. 
 
The Wembley Stadium of old was eventually shut in 2000, and plans to rebuild it began soon after, but due to many unforeseen circumstances, it didn&#39;t reopen until 2007. Since, it has hosted multiple football and rugby finals, the 2012 London Olympics, American Football, and the musical stylings of artists like Madonna, Metallica, and Beyonce.

Dating back to 1750, the building is still the headquarters of the Army in London. This ceremony takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment ride down from the Hyde Park Barracks to relieve those on duty and take up guard positions at Horse Guards. Passing through Hyde Park Corner, along Constitution Hill and The Mall, the riders arrive at Horse Guards Parade, right outside the Household Cavalry Museum. It is here that the impressive guard change ceremony takes place.

There are hourly sentry changes when the two guards protecting the Horse Guards entrance are replaced, as well as a formal inspection on the Front Yard of Horse Guards at 4PM daily.

Famously coined as the ‘Lady with the Lamp,’ Nightingale is best known for organising the nursing of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean war, checking her patients in the dead of night with a dimly lit lamp in hand. With a party of 38 nurses, Florence helped instigate improvements in providing food, supplies, blankets, and beds, as well as improving general living conditions. In 1860, Nightingale established The Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’ Hospital. It was the first professional training school for nurses and aimed to transform nursing into a respectable profession for women. Nightingale was determined to improve the health and living standards for patients and nurses. She campaigned tirelessly, publishing over 200 books, reports, and pamphlets on hospital planning and organisation that are still widely read today, including her most famous work Nursing: What it is and What it is Not.Nightingale’s methodologies were revolutionary for her time, and her teachings are still relevant today. She discovered a connection between how infection prevention and a healthy diet can aid recovery and established a unique ward design, known as Nightingale Wards, in response. Nightingale also established a need for specialist midwifery nurses in the hospital and set up a School of Midwifery Nursing at King’s College Hospital, which became the standard model for the rest of the country. Aptly located within St Thomas’ Hospital, the Florence Nightingale Museum first opened to the public in 1989. Mary Seacole’s upbringing also greatly influenced her life and career. Born in Jamaica to a Scottish father who served in the British army, and a Jamaican mother who was a highly skilled doctor, it seems almost natural that Seacole pursued a career in medicine and found her way to Crimea, to aid the soldiers. This interactive performance details her fascinating life, curing diseases and even entertaining soldiers at her famous British hotel.

Both were intended to commemorate Britain’s victories in the Napoleonic Wars ten years prior, and create an impressive approach to the newly completed palace. John Nash designed one of the arches, Marble Arch, and architect Decimus Burton was selected to design the other.Burton designed his arch in the neo-classical style, modelling it after the Arch of Titus in Rome. His plans, however, were rejected by the king and his committee, as they didn’t believe it was ostentatious enough. Burton set about creating a new design with more exterior ornamentation. Unfortunately, due to the king’s overspending on Buckingham Palace, a moratorium on public building work was introduced in 1828, leaving Burton’s arch bereft of decoration.In place of integral ornamentation and congruous decoration, it was suggested that a tribute to the Duke of Wellington—Britain’s leader and hero at the Battle of Waterloo—top the ‘Green Park Arch’. The chosen statue was designed by Matthew Cotes Wyatt and depicted Wellington astride a horse. At the time, it was the largest equestrian figure ever made.The giant statue was put in position atop the arch in 1846, garnering a huge amount of ridicule for its disproportionate size compared with the arch, and the poor quality of the sculpture itself. Burton hated it; many wanted it removed. Foreign visitors saw it as confirmation of Britain’s lack of taste and poor artistic instincts. But, after an intervention from the Duke of Wellington himself, the equestrian statue remained in place. It is this period that gives the arch its current name.When a road widening scheme saw the arch moved a short distance from its original site, the unpopular statue did not move with it. Instead, in 1885, it was unveiled in its new home of Aldershot. A new statue of Wellington was commissioned, and stands close to the Wellington Arch today. The arch finally got a fitting decoration in 1912, with the installation of the quadriga (four horse chariot) sculpture by Adrian Jones. Depicted Nike, goddess of victory, at the helm of the chariot, it is the largest bronze sculpture in Europe.Many don’t realise that Wellington Arch is hollow. One pier of it used to be used as a park ranger’s residence, the other as a police station. It was the smallest police station in the city and remained in the arch until the 1950s.
